Heart-Shaped Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownies

Can I even pull off a recipe this… girly?

I mean hearts can be cool, for sure.  I doodle them all the time.

And pink is okay, I guess.  In extremely limited, accent-only use.

But something pink and in the shape of a heart?

It’s like all that’s missing is a rainbow and a unicorn.

Since the dreaded Valentine’s Day is upon us, I suppose I can get away with something this Lisa Frank.  As I child I did in fact love Lisa Frank (duh) and religiously collected all of her stickers and trapper keepers.  But as I got older and grew into my charmingly sarcastic self, my enthusiasm for glitter! neon! sparkles! began to wane.

Eventually the majority of my wardrobe turned black, like my heart, and I’ve been a certified New Yorker ever since.

The irony is I actually don’t hate men, nor am I on the path to dying bitter and alone – hey Dave! – but for whatever reason I still like to shade Valentine’s Day.  It’s just so annoying, ya know?  Like, we get it – you’re in LOVE.  Someone cared enough to ask you on a second date!  And wow!  He bought you 4 dollar chocolates!!!

Congratulations, chick.  Now go away.

My disdain for Valentine’s Day is not to be confused with a disdain for chocolate, because hello – brownies.  But I guess I figured if I was going to be a sucker and give you a V-Day dessert, I might as well completely destroy my street cred with something heart-shaped and covered in pink sparkles.

And… uhhh…  “What street cred?”, you ask?  

The one in my head, you guys.  Keep up.

Brownies are pretty badass on their own, but I decided to take things up a notch and add in some Dark Chocolate Dreams Peanut Butter.  Dreams is in the name, so the results should be pretty obvious (amazing/obsessed/ate six of them in one sitting).  I tossed in some M&M’s too, because why the heck not.  And I reveled in the fact that these brownies are totally easy to bake, even if you barely know how to sift flour (hi, me again).

So yeah, I’ll be hate/love eating these all week long.  You should really join me.

Heart-Shaped Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownies

Yield: 8 servings

Prep Time: 15 mins

Cook Time: 30 mins

Total Time: 40 mins

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 cup Peanut Butter & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams PB
  • 1 cup Valentine M&M's
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tbsps Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 cup Water - approx.
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
  • Wax paper to line pan
  • Pink Sprinkles to decorate (optional)
  • Heart-Shaped Cookie Cutter (optional)

Directions:

  1. In large bowl sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda.  Add in the eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla, then stir vigorously with a spoon or whisk, combining as much as possible.  Next, slowly pour in water until all ingredients are incorporated into a thick, smooth mixture.  Set aside.
  2. Melt peanut butter in microwave for ~30 seconds.  Pour into batter and combine well, adding additional water as you go if mix needs thinning.  Lastly, pour M&M's into ziploc bag and break apart into pieces by smashing with the bottom of a pot. (see here as a reference)  Add broken candies to batter and combine as thoroughly as possible.
  3. Line a 9"X9" baking pan with wax paper, then evenly pour in brownie mix.  Top with additional candies and sprinkles, then bake at 350F for 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out of the center almost clean.  Cool for 10-15 minutes, then cut and serve, using heart-shaped cookie cutter to do so.

>> You want the brownie batter to be thick but spreadable, thus water should be added slowly to achieve optimal texture in steps 1 & 2.  Be sure not to add too much water, or mixture will be runny.

>> M&M's should be broken into big and small pieces - This creates the best fudgy center.  Be sure not to overly smash them.

    I forgot about Lisa Frank! Oh my gosh, I had so many Lisa Frank folders in elementary school. And stickers galore. These desserts are great for Valentine’s day : )
