Oven Baked Honey BBQ Chicken Wings

Oven Baked Honey BBQ Wings - Served Wings 1.2

Yesterday was a totally awesome Sunday.

I woke up without a hangover (go me!), made some pancakes from scratch (soooo good!), managed to make it to the gym (I’m amazing!!), and then spent the rest of the day watching football (yeah Jets!).

There’s really nothing better than scheduling your Sundays around a big game.  A little booze, a little bar food, some good ole’ fashioned shit-talking, and hours spent watching criminals juiced up athletes pummel each other for bounties – what’s more Christian than that?

So maybe the Lord’s Day wasn’t exactly designed for the purpose of football, but for five months of the year that’s what most people do with it anyway.  The NFL might be one of the best run businesses on earth, and there’s no shortage of reasons why.  Football isn’t just a sport, it’s a culture, and I love every minute of it.

Two brothers coaching against one another in the Super Bowl?  Unprecedented.  And awesome.

A quarterback with only 9 starts leading his team to the big game?  Inspiring.

A cold-blooded murder being endlessly worshiped like he’s the chosen one?  UNBELIEVABLE.

The NFL has given us a lot – from scantily clad Bud Light girls to salsa dancing wide receivers, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.  And when you’re at your local watering hole pounding down a few dozen brews, what’s better to fill your beer belly than a delicious pile of wings?  Wings are my favorite Sunday football food, and since I wasn’t hitting the bar yesterday, I decided to bring the tasty treat home with my Honey BBQ Chicken wings.

The thing about this recipe is that it’s really easy and super annoying all at the same time.  It’s really easy because you literally stir a bunch of ingredients in a bowl, pour it over some chicken, and bake.  It’s super annoying because homemade bbq sauce requires 10 trillion ingredients.

But trust me, it’s worth it.

I decided to make my own honey bbq sauce because I knew a from-scratch version would be time well spent. The grocery shopping was a bit tedious – does anyone actually have molasses lying around their cabinets? – but my efforts were validated after just one taste.  The difference was in the freshness – the flavors were sharp and crisp, the texture thick and velvety smooth.  Complimented with a lingering tang and bite that you don’t get from bottled versions, this sauce was everything I hoped for and more.

Once the sauce was completed, there wasn’t much else to do except sit back, relax, and watch the Falcons self-implode.  Finger licking good, these Honey BBQ Chicken Wings will definitely score a touchdown at your Super Bowl Party!

Serves: 3 - 4
Ingredients
  • 2 lbs Chicken Wings
  • 1½ cans Tomato Paste (6 oz. each)
  • 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar {packed}
  • ½ cup Molasses
  • ½ cup Honey
  • 3 tbsps Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tbsps Dry Mustard
  • 1½ tsps Hot Sauce
  • ½ tsp Crushed or Minced Garlic
  • ¼ tsp Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp Onion Powder
  • ½ tsp Paprika
  • ¾ tsp Chili Powder
  • ½ tsp Meat Tenderizer
  • ½ tsp Sea Salt - approx.
  • ½ tsp Coarse Black Peppercorn - approx.
Instructions
  1. In large bowl combine tomato paste, brown sugar, molasses, and honey, stirring until smooth. Next add worcestershire, mustard, hot sauce, garlic, cinnamon, onion powder, paprika, chili powder, and salt & pepper, combining thoroughly.
  2. Lay chicken wings out on cutting board and sprinkle with meat tenderizer on both sides. Next, place chicken in large ziploc bag, then pour over with bbq sauce until all pieces are immersed. Zip tightly and place in refrigerator to marinate for 1 -3 hours.
  3. When ready to cook, line chicken over wire cooling rack placed inside baking sheet. Spoon leftover bbq sauce over each piece, then place in the oven and bake at 400F for 40 minutes. Turn over chicken midway through cooking and spoon with additional sauce. Once finished, immediately plate and serve with carrots, celery, and blue cheese dressing.
Notes
>> Using a wire rack inside baking sheet makes the chicken crispier.
